Holmgren has no coaching itch

Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren doesn’t believe you will see him on the sidelines again.

Despite his prominent role in the organization, he has made it perfectly clear that he will not be returning to coach.

Rumors continue to float around that he would come down from the ivory towers if the team struggles under Eric Mangini.

Instead, the team president is working hard to try and build the Browns back into a winning organization.

It certainly won’t be easy, especially in a division that saw two teams get much better in the offseason.

Dawson skips minicamp

Cleveland Browns kicker Phil Dawson skipped a practice in what could be a protest over his contract situation.

Dawson is in the final year of his contract and obviously wants a little bit of stability heading into next season.

He is the second-leading scorer in team history and has been asking for a new contract for several years.

The kicker position is probably not high on the list of priorities for a team with so many problems, but it is something that needs to be addressed.

The Browns have said that Dawson’s absence is not all about his contract but would not elaborate.

Harrison will compete for carries

The Cleveland Browns don’t plan on handing over the starting running back job to Jerome Harrison.

Harrison took over for Jamal Lewis last year and never looked back, finishing the season very strong.

However, the Browns aren’t ready to turn over the reins to him even though there is no other solid alternative.

The Browns did trade back in the draft and select Tennessee running back Montario Hardesty in the second round.

The team would like to get him some carries each game at the very least, if not split the starting job between the two players.

Browns sign A. Smith

The Cleveland Browns have signed veteran tight end Alex Smith to a contract. Terms were not disclosed.

Smith started five games for the Philadelphia Eagles last season, filling in for the injured Brent Celek.

He had just three catches for 25 yards last year, although it’s worth noting that Philadelphia does not use the tight end very much.

Smith is still a fairly young guy, having been a third-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back in 2005.

If nothing else, he should be able to provide some depth at a position that had none last season.
